Asbury Memorial Theatre Announces Spring 2017 Production
(SAVANNAH, GA)
Asbury Memorial Theatre is pleased to announce it will present Robert Harling's "Steel Magnolias" as its 2017 spring production, with auditions to be held in January. Set in a small town in Louisiana -- in the time of really big hair -- six women gather in Truvy's Beauty Salon – where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. They also share an occasional bit of gossip as well as friendship and support.
Auditions will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Monday, January 9 and Tuesday, January 10, at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church. Parts are available for six strong, passionate female actors who can play types from about 20 to mid-60s. Actors should be prepared to do cold readings from the script. If necessary, callback auditions will be scheduled for Thursday, January 12.
Rehearsals will begin on Monday, January 16 and six performances are scheduled between March 3 and March 12 over four evenings and two matinees. The production is being directed by Carmel Garvin Hearn.
Acclaimed as "A superb, funny, deeply moving play," by the New York Daily News, Steel Magnolias celebrates family, friends and good hair. Its characters are true steel magnolias: southern belles who are flowery on the outside, but tough as steel inside. The play is alternately hilarious and touching as it moves from the excitement of Shelby's wedding to sadness as friends mourn her loss. The dialogue is sharp and funny and all six roles are interesting and challenging.
Audition forms and sides will be provided. Those auditioning are encouraged to bring a professional headshot, or a recent close-up photo, along with a theatrical resume, to attach to the audition form. No appointments are necessary and it is only necessary to attend one night of auditions.
